Dystractless

A behavioral driving safety system designed to reduce distracted driving through structured, startup-only enforcement — without surveillance or in-motion intervention.

What Dystractless Is

Dystractless is a compact in-vehicle system paired with a mobile app that introduces brief, time-limited start delays when required driving conditions are not met. It operates only when a driver attempts to start a vehicle and never intervenes while the vehicle is running.

The system was deliberately designed using the same behavioral and safety principles that underpin ignition interlock programs.

What Dystractless Is Not

How It Works (High-Level)

Before a vehicle can start, the Dystractless hardware checks for a secure, short-range Bluetooth connection to the authorized phone running the app. When connected, the vehicle is allowed to start immediately.

If the required connection is not present, or if a violation occurred on a prior trip, a brief, time-limited delay is applied before start is allowed. Start is always permitted after the delay expires.

If the app is backgrounded, closed, or the connection is lost during a trip, the system records a violation. Violations never affect a running vehicle and only influence the delay applied at the next start attempt.

Safety & Privacy

Dystractless stores only basic operational state information required for enforcement, such as connection status and violation flags. No personal data is collected or transmitted.

All enforcement is startup-only and time-limited by design, ensuring drivers are never stranded and vehicle operation is never affected while driving.

Policy & Evaluation

Dystractless is structured to support pilot evaluation by courts, transportation agencies, and safety programs. The system aligns with existing legal and safety frameworks and is designed for transparency, proportionality, and predictable outcomes.

We are currently engaging with legal and transportation stakeholders to explore limited pilot evaluations.
